Athens, OH 17 October 2012 – I am actively involved in the OU Flight Team. Our team has about twenty members, most of whom are aviation majors. I joined the team as a freshman because it offered opportunities for me to learn more about aviation and to attend regional and national flight team competitions.
During most of the school year, the team meets weekly to practice different competition events. We also do service projects and raise funds through cookouts and by washing planes at the OU airport. We also designed and sold hooded sweatshirts during the fall. This year I became the treasurer of the flight team, so I am heavily involved in our fund-raising events.
A particularly exciting part of being a member of the flight team is attending the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) competitions. The flight team recently participated in the regional event at Kent State University, and I am happy to say that the team brought home the safety trophy awarded at the end of the event.
I flew a Piper Warrior with our revolutionary Avidyne glass cockpit from OU to Kent State for the competition. In addition to other events, I enjoy competing in the aircraft recognition test where team members attempt to identify plane makes and types from an image briefly pictured on a screen. Our region has several teams with members who do very well in this event.
Overall, the OU flight team members placed well in a number of the events, and everyone worked hard and had a good time. It is a great experience to meet with other flight team members from our region and get to know them. Pilots and aviation leaders help to judge the various events, and the competition ends with a banquet with friends and family members attending.
